The PPK has saved my marriage on multiple occasions.
For the uninitiated, The PPK is The Post Punk Kitchen AKA Isa Chandra Moskowitz & Terry Hope Romero - two of the baddest vegan chefs in existence. I was lucky enough to stumble onto their cookbooks shortly after I gave up all animal products and whew is my husband thrilled. Brian, an omnivore and self-described tofu hater, couldn't have been more devastated when I became vegan. Visions of chickpea goulash and kale, lentil slop raced through his head. We'll never be able to have company over again, he thought.
I have to admit that I was slightly nervous myself. As someone who adores cooking and eating, I wanted to continue making interesting and delicious food. Veganomicon was the first cookbook I bought and its fancy, gorgeous, delectable recipes began intensely pleasing Brian and his belly. Crisis averted. Impending marriage collapse narrowly escaped.
Dinner Tonight, Vietnamese Seitan Baguette with Savory Broth Dip, is from Veganomicon and, as usual, it was fantastic. It's kind of a cross between a traditional Vietnamese sandwich and a french dip. The dip is made from the seitan broth and Chinese 5 spice powder and the sandwich itself is packed full of seitan, cucumber, cilantro and onions. Perfect for a casual summer night on the deck. Here is the recipe for homemade seitan.
I don't think I can post the recipe for the whole sandwich. You should really buy the book. It's worth its weight in gold. Dr Phil boasts, but his books can't do what this one can for a marriage. No siree.
